Manuel: Star-Spangled Couture, the first exhibition devoted to the work of this Mexican-born couturier known simply as Manuel-designer to the stars and the last great rodeo tailor-is available to interested venues beginning in December of 2005.

The exhibition is composed of fifty beautifully rhinestoned and embroidered "state" jackets, one for each of our nation's states, and an assemblage of performance ensembles made for such artists as Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. The state jacket series was created over a period of ten years. With his assistants, the designer selected symbols such as the state bird, flag, flower, seal and tree as well as other appropriate imagery to represent each state's distinctive character. Every original jacket features distinctive images chosen by Manuel to signify a state's mark on America. This visual expression of gratitude is Manuel's "thank you" to the nation where he as lived, worked and achieved great success in the world of custom couture since his emigration from Mexico in the mid 1950's.

The exhibition is organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville, Tennessee, and is currently on view at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas. It is accompanied by a full color catalogue and educational videos. For more information, please contact Katie Delmez Welborn at 615.744.3245 or [log in to unmask]
