I think this discussion has gotten pretty far off the track. The point is:
pest control is an important part of collections management. If you want
to free the critters, then use vegetable oil (per our IPM manager). Let's
not lose sight of what we are trying to protect here. I have seen the
damage done in archival collections and textile collections by nesting,
chewing mice. I have also seen furniture chewed through by mice. Do I
like dealing with dead mice? No, but it is necessary in order for me to be
a good steward of my collection. Bottom line.

p.s. I like cats. I have two of them. But I would not bring one into a
historic house museum.
