Subject: Fur Coat Care

Hello fellow listers!
We recently acquired a fur coat for our permanent collection. According t=

to kill any unseen critters, but how should I care for the coat after the=

Dear List Members,

=20

The May 18th application deadline for the Conservation Center for Art
and Historic Artifact's (CCAHA) subsidized assessment programs is
approaching. =20

=20

Preservation Needs Assessment Program:

=20

Through funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH),
CCAHA is able to offer a limited number of subsidized Preservation Needs
Assessment for $350. You are eligible to apply for this program if you
institution owns a paper-based humanities collection that is available
to the public on a regularly scheduled basis and has historical and
education significance. To be considered, the institution should
demonstrate a strong commitment to collections care, and the size of the
institution's paper-based collections must warrant a full day survey.

=20

Further details and an application form are available at
http://www.ccaha.org/surveys.php

=20

Vulnerability Assessment Program:

=20

The Vulnerability Assessment Program is also funded through NEH.
Through this program CCAHA is able to offer Vulnerability Assessments,
the first step in the disaster planning process, for $350. During an
on-site consultation, CCAHA staff reviews and examines the institution's
environment, history, location, structural needs, pest control, fire
protection, security procedures, local resources, and training
requirements. Insurance considerations, collections documentation, and
collections salvage priorities are also addressed. The written report
provides observations, recommendations, and resources to serve as a
guide in the development of a comprehensive disaster plan for the
institution.      =20

 =20

The Vulnerability Assessment Program is intended for small to mid-sized
institutions with humanities based collections in the Mid-Atlantic
region, which includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, New
York, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia. Institutions
wishing to participate in the program must be willing to make a
commitment to developing an Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan, or
updating the plan that they currently have in place, and must assign a
project manager. =20

=20

Priority will be given to Institutions that would not normally have the
resources to pay for this service at full cost, or the staff time or
expertise to complete the assessment in-house. =20

=20

Further details and an application form are available at
http://www.ccaha.org/surveys.php

=20

If you have any questions about either of these programs, please feel
free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Laura Hortz Stanton

Betsy,
If you are looking for journals, I would recommend Michael Rogers Press or

Hello all,

I am working on a project wherein we are re-furbishing an existing exhibit
in a bank. We are trying to bring the exhibit up to museum standards (or as
close as possible). There are five windows with french panes, approximately
40" X 60." Currently, venetian blinds offer the only barrier between the
sun and the artifacts. At this point several documents are clearly damaged
and we will need to find substitutes and develop a rotation schedule. I am
wondering if folks out there have any advice regarding the types of barriers
available. Some have recommended using films that are applied directly to
the glass and plexi that can block the penetration of UV rays. The designer
(in addition to folks at the bank) would like some of the natural light to
penetrate the space. I have seen a black mesh shade used in combination
with a plexi UV filter. This allows a diffuse light penetrate and is
favored by my designer. I would especially appreciate recommendations for
vendors. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Mary Beth Corrigan

Webmaster questionsHi Julie -

I would try www.salaryexpert.com to get an idea about salary range. =
Salary is going to be largely affected by the type of web site the web =
master maintains. There are programs like Adobe/Macromedia Contribute =
that allow someone with zero technical expertise to maintain a site. =
Many secretaries maintain department sites using this program. If your =
site is database driven and has e-commerce capabilities - you would need =
to have someone with much more technical expertise.=20

I taught web design at a college and have been a practicing web designer =
for several years so I can probably help you with any additional =
technical questions you might have. Feel free to e-mail me off the =
list.=20

department/position oversees the website content?=20

Also, if any of you have a job description/salary range you could =

Are you exhibiting just documents? If so, can reproductions be made for =
exhibit? That way, you won't have to restrict the light at all, and =
historic material will be 100% preserved.

If there are other artefacts in the exhibits, or if you must use original =
documents, remember visible light is also harmful, not just UV. Try to =
position the artefact so no direct sunlight will fall on them (are these =
in cases? If so, then avoiding direct sunlight will also help keep the =
cases from heating up too much--another thing you want to avoid). =20

For UV filtration, Carr McLean carries Windowgrip film http://www.carrmclea=

should do you.

Hello all,

I am working on a project wherein we are re-furbishing an existing exhibit
in a bank. We are trying to bring the exhibit up to museum standards (or =
as
close as possible). There are five windows with french panes, approximately=

40" X 60." Currently, venetian blinds offer the only barrier between the
sun and the artifacts. At this point several documents are clearly =
damaged
and we will need to find substitutes and develop a rotation schedule. I =
am
wondering if folks out there have any advice regarding the types of =
barriers
available. Some have recommended using films that are applied directly to
the glass and plexi that can block the penetration of UV rays. The =
designer
(in addition to folks at the bank) would like some of the natural light to
penetrate the space. I have seen a black mesh shade used in combination
with a plexi UV filter. This allows a diffuse light penetrate and is
favored by my designer. I would especially appreciate recommendations for
vendors. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Mary Beth Corrigan

We are currently using Thomas Capri track lighting with Par 38 track

Technology, Leadership, Preservation

USEFUL Themes at MPMA's 2007 Conference

Learn what's NEW and see what's up and coming
at
Mountain-Plains Museums Association's
2007 Conference
September 10-14, 2007

MPMA's Conference Program is now available online at _www.mpma.net_
(http://www.mpma.net)

Fargo is a place you'll want to know about. Steeped in ethnic history (ya
sure, ya betcha!), it also has an active contemporary art scene. And
Microsoft's second largest headquarters is located there. We'll draw on
Microsoft's
expertise and others to learn how to apply new technologies to museums
(MySpace,
YouTube, video on demand, podcasting). Directors can join a roundtable just
for directors. And we'll learn how the Plains Art Museum was an anchor for
revitalizing downtown Fargo.

As the conference hotel IS downtown, you'll walk to coffee shops, boutiques
and restaurants in the
NEW urban chic Fargo. And do stay for the first ever Museum Idol (MPMA is
known for its FUN events).

MPMA's Annual Conference in 2007 is in Fargo, North Dakota, September
10-14th. Come learn the latest trends in technology for Museums. And hear
phases
like
Ya, sure ya betcha. Uff da.

MPMA: A Ten-state museum network
MPMA is the professional service provider to museums in ten states:
Colorado,
Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota,

Texas and Wyoming.
