Oral History Training Institute Planned for June 11-13, 2002
Application Deadline May 1

To provide local historians, librarians, teachers (grade school through
university level), and other community groups with the expertise they need
to complete successful oral history projects, the Ohio Association of
Historical Societies and Museums, the Ohio Historical Society, the Ohio
Humanities Council and the Rural Life Center at Kenyon College are
collaborating to sponsor the second annual "Oral History Institute." The
Institute will be held on June 11-13, 2002 at Kenyon College in Gambier,
Ohio.

With the goal of broadly introducing the theory and practice of oral
history, the curriculum includes such activities as

*       Framing interview questions
*       Conducting interviews
* Transcribing interviews from tape to typed transcripts
* Archiving and storing tapes and interview transcripts

Participants will also learn interview techniques, discuss the various
ethical and legal issues facing oral historians, and address the limits of
oral history as a source of historical information. Scheduled too are
breakout sessions on funding oral history projects and the use of video in
oral history. Over the course of the three-day workshop, participants will,
in addition, have ample opportunities to consult with the faculty of the
Oral History Institute one on one regarding individual projects.

Four experienced oral historians, all of whom taught at Oral History
Institute in 2001, will return for 2002's program: Donna DeBlasio, Center
for Historic Preservation at Youngstown State University; David Mould, Ohio
University; Steve Paschen, Archival Services, University of Akron, and
Howard Sacks, Rural Life Center, Kenyon College.

Admission to the Oral History Institute is open to paid staff and dedicated
volunteers from local historical organizations, libraries, schools, and
colleges and universities, and civic groups, primarily from Ohio, who have
little formal training in oral history, but who have a serious interest in
using it in the community, in organizations, or in classrooms.

Admission is competitive and will be limited to 30 participants. Although
the Oral History Institute wishes to ensure that representatives from many
different organizations will attend, multiple applications from the same
organization will be considered, as space is available. The fee for the
Institute is $100.00 per person and includes two overnight room stays, six
meals, and all workshop materials.

Scholarships in the amount of $100 are available from the Ohio Humanities
Council to cover the fee for attending the 2002 Oral History Institute.
Five scholarships are available. For consideration, applicants must attach
a separate statement of financial need to their applications for the
Institute.

For an application form, e-mail or call the Ohio Association of Historical
Societies and Museums, care of the Ohio Historical Society's Local History
Office at mailto:[log in to unmask], (800) 858-6878 or (614) 297-2340.
Applications may also be obtained by writing to the Local History Office,
Ohio Historical Society, 1982 Velma Avenue, Columbus, OH 43211, ATTN: Oral
History Institute.

Completed applications must be postmarked or e-mailed on or by May 1, 2002.
All applicants will be notified regarding admission on or by May 10.

The Oral History Institute is sponsored by the Ohio Association of the
Historical Societies and Museums, the Ohio Historical Society, the Ohio
Humanities Council, and the Rural Life Center at Kenyon College. The Oral
History Institute is funded, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment
for the Humanities
