The U.S. Navy’s National Museum of the American Sailor seeks applicants for a Collections Internship. This internship provides a rare developmental opportunity for a graduate, undergraduate, or non-traditional student with a strong interest in history to participate in the hands-on establishment of a new U.S. Navy history museum’s collections program.

Under the supervision of the Museum Curator, interns will learn and perform career-developmental duties such as:

-Conducting historical research on museum artifacts to determine dates of creation and use, ownership, and geographical and other information.
-Assisting with the inventory and cataloging of museum artifacts.
-Labelling and organizing museum artifacts.
-Storing museum artifacts.

Skills required for this internship:

-Ability to type on a keyboard, entering both capital and lower-case letters.
-Accuracy and good judgment in transcribing written data from varying types of source documents into a standardized format.
-Ability to skim and summarize the major subjects of historical documents based upon unformatted and varying sources.
-Comfort and familiarity with entering and saving data in a spreadsheet and database.
-Ability to envision long-term process and goals while typing and describing individual items of data.
-Ability to follow standardized vocabularies of descriptive terms, or to recognize the need for standardized terminology.
-Possess legible handwriting
-Ability to climb ladders and lift up to 40 lbs.

-A writing sample of not less than 1,000 words
