Communicating Through Exhibitions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exhibitions have tremendous power to shape the messages, perspectives
and values that museums communicate to their publics. This course
examines the changing role of exhibitions in the museum context, and
encourages you to learn to analyze and manage the key elements
involved in creating relevant, meaningful exhibitions. The importance
of team work and consultation is stressed. Topics include:
- the history, functions and purpose of exhibitions
- the role of the artifact
- frames of reference for communication
- issues of cultural diversity, perspective and voice
- the development of storylines
- methodologies for exhibition planning
- accessibility
- roles of the curator, educator, registrar, conservator, other staff
and community representatives
- project management
- funding  and sponsorship
- temporary and traveling exhibitions
- ethical considerations
- visitor research and evaluation techniques
Instructor: John Coppola is a consultant and Former Director of the
Office of Exhibits Central with the Smithsonian Institution
Dates: September 18-27
Please register by: August 21
Fee: $589 Canadian, credit and non-credit options
Accommodation: Bed & breakfast facilitites available on campus for
$60 Canadian/night. Program staff can advise on off-campus
alternatives.
