Strong, sustained, and mutually-beneficial relationships with communities are critical to museum, heritage and cultural organizations seeking to play timely, relevant, positive, and socially responsible roles in society. This new distance education course builds your knowledge and skills associated with effective community cultural development activities, and strengthens your capacity to:
 
•           Develop an awareness and understanding of the major changes and trends that affect your community 
•           Assess readiness to initiate community partnerships and acquire competencies in community cultural development 
•           Identify, record and map community assets 
•           Build and sustain reciprocal, mutually beneficial relationships with diverse groups through a range of appropriate and collaborative initiatives 
•           Include and balance diverse perspectives associated with effective community cultural and social development activities 
•           Facilitate group decision making, dealing with controversy and resolving group conflict 
•           Evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of community partnerships
 
 
Fee: CAD$618.00 plus coursepack (prices determined by the UVic Bookstore).

About the Instructor: 
 
Elizabeth Kidd is a community arts consultant and former Arts Programmer of Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Community Centre in Vancouver where she worked for 11 years. In that position she generated or facilitated a number of collaborative community arts projects, bringing together contemporary dance, visual arts, performance and craft where participants could learn to work together in a non-competitive, creative and safe environment. Participants in these collaborative, interdisciplinary projects include professionals and amateur artists working with disadvantaged and communities at risk, neighbourhood groups, and diverse cultural groups within the city. Previously, Elizabeth was Chief Curator at The Edmonton Art Gallery, contract researcher for the National Gallery of Canada, and art curator at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, the Newfoundland Museum, and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Elizabeth continues to work as a consultant with cultural non-profit organizations to help them develop an organizational vision, mission and mandate, based on the needs and expectations of the communities and individuals they serve.

About Our Program
 
The Cultural Resource Management Program offers distance education courses for professionals, volunteers and board members in museums, galleries, heritage sites, cultural centres and related organizations. Courses are designed to address the emerging needs of the sector and build your personal and organizational capacity.
 
In our courses, you interact with colleagues from across North America and beyond, participate in stimulating learning activities, and relate your learning to the practical issues and realities of your workplace and community. Courses are taught by instructors who are leading professionals in the field.
 
Courses can be taken individually or towards a comprehensive diploma or focused professional specialization certificate. Individual credit and non-credit course registration options are also available. Choose the program and / or course best suited to meet your needs from the flexible options available.
