Summer 1999 Internships at Shelburne Museum

Shelburne Museum offers a variety of internship opportunities for
undergraduate, graduate, and recently graduated students.  Internships are
available in most areas of the Museum including education, collections,
conservation, curatorial, and public relations.  While in most cases the
Museum cannot offer a stipend, housing is available for selected interns
committing to full-time internships for the summer.

Applicants should send a letter describing their primary museum interests
and career goals accompanied by a résumé to: Rich Strum, Coordinator of

Children's Theatre Camp Assistant
Intern will act as administrative and program support person for series of
children's camps interpreting history and art through drama and dance. Must
be well organized, outgoing, and have experience working with groups of
children ages 6-14. June 21 - August 13, 40 hours per week, Monday -
Friday.

Collections Management Assistant
Intern will assist in projects involving inventory, research, records
reconciliation, and basic photography of selected museum collections.
Opportunity to acquire basic cataloging and registration skills. Stipend
may be available.

Curatorial Researcher
Interns will work with Curators to research and develop exhibitions for the
2000 season. Interns will be able to explore the Museum's collections to
identify and research objects for the exhibitions. Interns will help
develop themes and write the labels for the exhibitions. Exhibition and
research topics include-The Art of the Printed Object; Folk Sculpture:
Trade Signs, Weathervanes and Whirligigs; Decorative Arts and Historic
Houses; Native American Arts and their Impact on Modern Art. Intern should
have good writing and research skills and self-motivation. Experience in
the field is invaluable for graduate programs. We offer extended
internships through June 2000. Housing and stipend may be available.

Exhibit Demonstrator
Bring Kid Stuff-an exhibit of toys from the 1950s and 60s-to life with a
variety of activities, from yo-yo contests to etch-a-sketch demonstrations,
for visitors of all ages. Intern will take charge of organizing and
implementing this visitor program in a variety of indoor and outdoor
settings. Must be energetic, very outgoing, self-motivated, well organized,
and have experience teaching and/or working with children ages 5+. Two
positions. June 1 -
September 10, 40 hours per week.

Family Activity Center Assistant
Assist staff and visitors of all ages with collections-based interactive
activities. Intern will help organize and implement various hands-on art
and craft programs for children, and support youth volunteer program. Must
be well organized, outgoing, and have experience working with children,
ages 3+. Program evaluation skills a plus. Late June - early September, 40
hours per week.

Interpreter Education
Intern will develop resource materials for Museum Interpreters related to
the Museum's Folk Art exhibits. Intern will also gain interpretive
experience, and plan and present a one hour Interpreter training session
covering a relevant Folk Art theme. Stipend may be available.

Library/Archives Assistant
Intern will assist in projects involving library and archives preservation.
Opportunity to acquire basic library and archives management skills.

Photography Intern
Intern will assist the staff photographer in the dark room, photo studio,
and around the grounds on various photo shoots. Technical instruction on
the use of 35mm and medium format cameras will be included, along with the
opportunity to learn or develop various skills related to studio and
outdoor people/event photography. A full time internship will also include
assisting with ongoing projects in the photo library/archives up to 21/2
days a week, depending on interests and skill level. Candidates should have
B/W photography and printing experience, be motivated and willing to learn,
and able to take directions well. Bring your camera; film will be provided
for museum projects.

Fall and Spring Semester Internships
Shelburne Museum offers semester-length internships during both the fall
and spring semesters by special arrangement. In some cases, housing is
available for full-time interns. For information about internship
