Hi Mary:

I did walking tour in Deadwood, SD. I talked about the
history of the buildings and the people that lived
there, but the architecture as well.
I pointed out the architectural ghosts or where the
building had been changed/added on to. The kids loved
that part and started to look on their own for other
buildings that had evidence of historic changes.

At the Historic Adams House I set up a sort of
treasure hunt. I took pictures of the architectural
elements of the house, scanned them and added the
definition under each picture. I would take a group
around the house and have them try to find the various
elements.

Another treasure hunt I have done was teaching the use
of a compass in conjunction with pioneer surveying
history. After I showed them how to use a compass we
set off on a treasure hunt. The clues were the degree
and direction on the compass, and it led to the
treasure.
