CURATOR OF EXHIBITIONS - SOUTH DAKOTA ART MUSEUM

Range N14 Base Salary:  $23,920 per 12 months plus fringe benefits.

POSITION PURPOSE:  To develop, coordinate and install exhibitions. A listing
of essential functions is available upon request.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
*       State and department policies and procedures;
*       Museum philosophy, professional practices and ethics;
*       Exhibit design principles, methods and practices;
*       Educational resources; and
*       Research methodology.

Ability to:
*       Develop and implement exhibits budget including construction,
rental, signage, design and printing of promotional materials and shipping;
*       Organize and prioritize considerable amounts of information,
materials, projects and planning;
*       Develop exhibit concepts, objectives and long-range exhibition
planning;
*       Solicit and review exhibit proposals for possible consideration;
*       Solicit shipping bids and coordinate shipping schedules;
*       Maintain communication with artists scheduled to exhibit regarding
Museum policies and conditions for upcoming exhibits;
*       Work with Curator of Education to procure publicity materials and
educational programs and plan the marketing strategy to promote individual
exhibitions;
*       Work with artists to make contractual agreements with regards to the
conditions of their loans;
*       Pack and unpack artwork;
*       Install artwork and maintain exhibits;
*       Define areas of financial need, conduct research and write grants;
*       Research, write, design and install labels and possibly write
essays;
*       Recruit, train and supervise interns and volunteers;
*       Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
*       Perform public speaking; and
*       Be organized and proactive.
