Dear Museum Colleague:

In order to better fulfill our educational mission and to serve the
needs of the museum community, Arkansas State University Museum is
currently exploring the creation of a graduate program in Museum
Studies. In order to determine if there is sufficient interest in this
program and what skills museums are looking for in new graduates, we are
asking for your help.

The enclosed survey will help us to decide which approach to Museum
Studies will best fill the needs of small to mid-sized museums. We are
considering offering one or more of three options. The first would be a
traditional Master's degree program, requiring one-and-a-half to two
years on-campus education and an internship or thesis. The second
approach would be to offer a one-year, on-campus certificate that could
be applied towards a degree in another field or taken by students
already holding another degree. The third option would be a distance
learning course leading to a certificate in Museum Studies. Instruction
would be given by a combination of short on-site workshops and
internet-based classes, allowing professionals in the museum field to
increase their skills and training without having to leave their present
jobs.

The survey is available on the ASU Museum web page at
http://museum.astate.edu/survey.html or as a .pdf file at
http://museum.astate.edu/survey.pdf . If you use the online version,
your response will automatically be sent to us. If you wish to print
the .pdf file, you can fax the survey to 870-972-2793 or mail it to:

For those interested in the results of this survey, we will post our
findings to the ASU Museum web page at http://museum.astate.edu by March
2000.

Thank you for your help.
