Our recent investigations for national law enforcement agencies and private
collectors have revealed groups of fraudulent paintings and decorative
objects. Clients have inquired after ways to mark objects so they may be
used for study and display without someday (easily) re-entering the
marketplace as authentic works. The intent here, I believe, is to protect
potential collectors while honoring the property rights of present owners.

I'm inviting your opinions, as a discussion list composed largely of museum
professionals, on marking fraudulent objects, both from a theoretical and
practical point of view.

Thank you.
