The generic term for what many of us use as foam shelf lining is closed-cell
polyethylene foam. It comes in a variety of thicknesses (from sheeting to
planks). A good discussion from the Conservation listserv by conservator
Scott Williams (probably more detail than any of us wants) can be found at
http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/byauth/williams/foam.html.

Another explanation of different types of foam (from the manufacturer's
perspective) can be found at http://www.foamdesign.com/materials.htm

My thought is that Volara is too expensive to use as shelf-lining, but that
Ethafoam or any of the other polyethylene products listed by Scott would be
fine.

Amanda:

Our conservator recommended Volara to line our shelves with, which we
ordered in 1/8" thickness. It comes in both black and white, I believe.
