Learning Systems Group is pleased to share the following information
with you about an exciting new arts- and humanities-based drug and
violence prevention resource:

New Website Features role of arts and humanities in drug and violence
prevention

Creative Initiative Encourages Partnerships between Schools and Cultural
Organizations to Achieve Goal 7 of Goals 2000

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Washington, D.C., August 13, 1997ŠThe new Creative Partnerships for
Prevention website has been launched to assist schools, cultural
organizations and others working with youth in using the arts and
humanities to strengthen drug and violence prevention efforts and
promote healthy youth development. The website, at
http://www.CPPrev.org, is part of Creative Partnerships for Prevention:
Using the Arts and Humanities to Build Resiliency in Youth, a national
drug and violence prevention initiative funded by the U.S. Department of
Education1s Safe and Drug Free Schools Program.
The Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program provides leadership for
the U.S.
Department of Education's efforts to achieve the Seventh National
Education Goal--that by the year 2000 all schools will be free of drugs
and violence and the unauthorized presence of firearms and alcohol and
will offer a disciplined environment that is conducive to learning.
The new website features highlights from eight national
demonstration
sites modeling collaborations between schools and cultural
organizations. The colorful, extensive site also offers profiles of
existing programs that foster young people1s resiliency through the arts
and humanities; a forum for exchanging ideas with professionals in the
fields of education, prevention, the arts and the humanities; referrals
to related resources; and a prevention gallery showcasing examples of
work produced by youth in arts- and humanities-based prevention
programs.
This fall, the site will also include the complete Creative
Partnerships for Prevention: Using the Arts and Humanities to Build
Resiliency in Youth resource guide. The 60-page guide provides arts-and
humanities- based activities as well as information on successful
resiliency and drug and violence prevention strategies. The activities
are targeted for middle-school aged youth, with appropriate adaptations
for older and younger students, and are designed for implementation in
schools or arts and humanities programs serving youth.

A free printed copy of the resource guide can be reserved
through the
Creative Partnerships for Prevention website, or by calling Learning
Systems Group at (202) 628-8080. Quantities are limited.
The Creative Partnerships for Prevention website and resource
guide are
being developed under a grant from the U.S. Department of Education1s
Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program to Learning Systems Group. The
materials were created in consultation with the National Endowment for
the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the President1s
Committee on the Arts and Humanities, and with input from educators,
artists and prevention professionals.
