The Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, CA is recruiting for an Archivist.  

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Archivist is responsible for the management of the National Museum’s archival holdings within the permanent collection and institutional archive. This includes oversight of the correct application of professional standards within the archival program; management of archives-based grant and special projects; prioritization of backlogs and facilitation of processing work flows; providing and promoting access to open collections; assisting researchers; processing collections; drafting and reviewing finding aids; and supervising interns and volunteers in collections work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.	Oversee National Museum’s archival collections; collections processing and prioritization of work flows including work in the TMS collections management database; develop print and digital access tools as appropriate to enhance the use and understanding of these collections; implement preservation strategies; when appropriate, interview donors of potential collections; provide input on collection development.
2.	Serve as lead archivist on the Buddhist Churches of America Archives (BCA), overseeing processing, preservation, and access of the collection, including writing series and folder-level finding aids to be submitted to the Online Archive of California; oversee collection development of incoming or new materials; act as coordinating representative for the National Museum at bi-annual BCA/JANM Archives Advisory Committee meetings and for other BCA events and projects; work extensively with researchers accessing the collection; assist the BCA with developing outreach projects on local and national levels.
3.	As needed, recruit, train and supervise interns, volunteers, and temporary staff for archives-related projects and tasks. Will require occasional availability on weekends and or evenings.
4.	Staff members must be able to work with visitors of all ages to support the various events sponsored by the National Museum. Each staff member will be expected to work on a minimum of three museum-wide events per year: a) National Museum’s Annual Gala Dinner, Silent Auction and After Party- (off-site) typically held in the Spring (April-May) b) National Museum’s Family Festival - Oshogatsu Festival Day (January) or Natsumatsuri Festival (August) c) JANM Family Free Days – Free Admission Family Days held quarterly on select Saturdays.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education: The position requires a Master’s degree in Information or Library Science with a concentration in archival studies from an ALA-accredited library school as well as a Bachelor’s degree in the humanities, arts, or social sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience/Knowledge: A minimum of two-years professional experience working in an archives, museum, or manuscript repository. Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary archival standards and records management principles and practices. Demonstrated ability to train and supervise Interns and Volunteers, process collections and develop print and electronic finding aids. Familiarity with community-based organizations with non-traditional means of promoting use of archival and library materials. Must have basic technical competence with electronic means of recording and managing data. Ability to train and constructively evaluate professional staff, student interns and volunteers. Commitment to serving the public and working as a team. Willingness to learn and apply new skills. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented. Ability to work in a fast paced team-environment, be a self-starter. Demonstrate commitment and flexibility at all times in order to ensure high quality service. . Ability to adjust and provide appropriate action when unanticipated need arises. Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus. Japanese language skills preferred.

Communication: Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent communication and negotiation skills. Must be able to provide courteous and effective service to co-workers, volunteers and the general public. Ability to read and comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, update manuals and instructions. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group format.

Computer: Computer literate, Internet savvy, and experience with MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Gmail preferred, speed and accuracy are essential. Familiarity with TMS collections management database.

Math: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning: Act on own initiative. Must be able to comply with institutional policies and procedures. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Perform successfully when juggling and re-prioritizing multiple assignments in a fast-paced, changing work environment. Reliable follow-through on assigned projects in a complete, well conceived and timely manner.
