Strategic human resource management is vital in the creation of positive
and supportive working environments in which the dedicated, creative
professionals who animate the cultural sector can thrive. This course
examines best practices in HR planning and management with an emphasis
on the interconnected needs of the individual and the institution, and
strengthens your capacity to interact with and supervise museum,
heritage, and other cultural workers as you develop your understanding
of:

*	the changing cultural workforce 
*	organizational structure and dynamics 
*	approaches to leadership and decision-making 
*	governance and HR policy development 
*	competency development through recruitment, selection and
management 
*	performance planning, evaluation and supervision 
*	continuing professional education and training 
*	communications and conflict resolution 
*	integrating and managing volunteers in the workforce 
*	succession planning 
*	legal considerations 
*	ethical and professional expectations and accountability

Fee: CDN$650*, including a CDN$60 materials fee and a CDN$40 textbook
fee (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options).
CDN$200 (includes $100 registration deposit, your $60 materials and $40
textbook fees) is required with registration. Please note fees are
subject to change. 

Instructor: Thea Vakil has special expertise in human resource
management, organizational change, public policy and finance. She has
taught widely in the areas of management, strategic human resource
management and public policy in the School of Public Administration and
in the Faculty of Business. She is also a Senior Fellow at the Centre
for Public Sector Studies at the University of Victoria.

At a corporate government level Thea provided human resources and
financial policy advice the provincial Treasury Board, developed and
implemented changes to provincial health care policy programs and
integrated a number of social services programs. In 2003/04 Thea was the
Faculty Coordinator and Instructor for the Museum Leadership Development
Program.
