Volunteer appreciation is a very important issue. Especially since
2001 is the International Year of the Volunteer. (see
http://www.unv.org/events/iyv2001/index.html and http://www.iyv2001.org/ )

We have found that the majority of our volunteers appreciate a
simple thank you and also knowing that they are needed, and are doing a
worthwhile task. We also have an annual luncheon for our volunteers and in
the past have presented them with our current publication or calendar. The
calendars have always been well received! The books haven't always been
everyones cup of tea! We also have pins that recognize years of service, and
these are presented at a special reception held seperately from our annual
luncheon. (ours is later this month and one of my volunteers will be getting
his 15 year pin).

Also as part of international year of volunteers we have had the
various supervisors sign cards for the volunteers which will go out with a
letter from the CEO, and some free tickets to special events and a few other
things. This is just the start of things for the year.
