It is indeed a sad day for museums interested in British naval history.

:BRITISH NAVY HERO NELSON'S HAIR SELLS FOR $10,000

LONDON, Dec 13 - A lock of British naval hero Admiral
Horatio Nelson's hair encased in a gold compass and a splinter of wood
cut from the spot on the warship Victory where he died sold for 6,325
pounds ($9,880) at Sotheby's on Tuesday.
It was part of a collection of paper, medals, swords and
paintings relating to Admiral Lord Northesk, third in command at the
Battle of Trafalgar, which fetched 419,925 pounds ($655,800), more
than twice the expected sale price.
The Battle of Trafalgar, fought off the Spanish coast on October
21, 1805, was a momentous victory for Nelson's fleet, ending the
threat of a Napoleonic invasion of Britain.
As part of the Northesk Collection, an Admiral's Gold Trafalgar
Medal was bought for 106,000 pounds ($165,500) by a private collector,
a record for a naval medal at auction.
The same collector bought a rare presentation sword engraved with
Nelson's legendary rally to his fleet: "England expects every man to
do his duty," for 73,000 pounds ($114,000).
The collector also bought Nelson's original secret strategy for
the Battle of Trafalgar for 56,500 pounds ($88,240), well above the
expected 15,000 pounds ($23,430).
In it, Nelson set out his bold idea "of bringing the Enemy to
Battle in such a manner as to make the business decisive" by attacking
the French fleet in the centre in three parallel lines.
The collection was sold by the present Lord Northesk. His agent
Robert Holden said he was "delighted with the result of today's sale.
Given the exceptional outcome of the sale, he does not regret his
decision to sell."
