Your batteries might well have supported a telephone system, or very
possibly a dc electric system. They are not rare, as I have seen them in
"antique" shops on several occasions. When the local electric company here
renovated part of its old plant about 20 years ago, they discarded a lot of
somewhat larger glass cells (without the Exide mark), which had apparently
been part of  a backup battery system for the power grid! probably in the
19th century.
