A number of studies have been done on the issue of economic benefits
of museums.

I believe that it was the Ontario Art Gallery Association or a
similar Ontario organization that produced a workbook that all the
user had to do was plug in a series of financial figures and then
use the built in formulas to show the financial impact of the
institution. They developed a number of ratio's.

This system is OK, but my preference is to do a more detailed site
specific survey. Standard ratio's may make life easy, but nothing
compares to "hard" data.

Talk to your local college stats or marketing department about
assisting you with this project. They are often looking for real
world class projects.
