The Lehigh County Historical Society (LCHS) in Allentown, PA, is seeking a
summer intern for a significant curatorial/collections management project.
The project involves preparing a three-story, fully furnished property for
use as a collections storage facility, and includes several steps. First,
the intern (with the assistance of volunteers) will sort through the house's
contents to determine what is there and make recommendations regarding the
disposition of objects, based on well-defined guidelines and the LCHS
collections policy. These decisions many require some preliminary research.
An inventory and/or box list will then be made for each disposition
category. Those items to be accessioned into the collections will be
catalogued into "Minaret," the collections management database used by LCHS.
As the property will ultimately be utilized for collections storage, one of
the project's final steps will be to organize and plan various storage areas
in the house.

The preferred candidate will have a basic familiarity with decorative arts,
knowledge of accepted collections management practices, and some familiarity
with computers. The intern must be willing to work independently, with
minimal guidance from curatorial staff. The successful candidate must also
possess the ability to make preliminary decisions (based on well-defined
collections guidelines) regarding disposition of the house's contents. He
or she must also be able to supervise volunteers, enjoy a challenge, and be
willing to get dirty. The 10-week internship is slated to begin June 3,
1996, and end August 9, 1996; however, these dates are flexible. The
internship comes with a $2,500 stipend and housing. Interested candidates
should send a letter of interest and resume to Colleen E. Curry, Collections
Manager, LCHS, Old Courthouse, P.O. Box 1548, Allentown, PA 18105-1548, by
April 1, 1996. Please, no on-line applications or inquiries. Thanks!
