I have one more thought to add to Jennifer's notes on museum
Ph.D. vs. "content" Ph.D.

You know, it's a tradition in many academic *library* settings
to require not only an MLS (the terminal degree in the field),
but a *second* "subject area" master's degree as well. The theory
is that in order to effectively provide information access, one does
need to know more than "how to type catalog cards." Understanding the
subject matter is a critical component in managing the collection
and meeting the patron's needs (not to mention UNDERSTANDING the
patron's needs!).

My two cents' worth. Jan
