My apologies if I misread your post, Mike. I understood your email to
suggest that I sign off the list because I defended another person's
post (or right to post) information that not everyone may be interested
in. I also recall that you expressed the opinion that my post and the
evolution thread were all "junk." I can't think of many people that
would consider such a statement anything but an insult (although a
rather mild one). Although I would not consider your post a reason to
not hire you (especially if you were the best candidate), there are
probably many people that would simply not get past it.

I did not intend my comments to be personal -- it was a cumulative reply
to the many negative responses to posts that have appeared over the
years I've been on this and other listservs whenever there is a
controversial or much discussed topic (resulting in many, many posts in
everyone's mail box). Often the driving force behind those negative
responses seems to be "I'm not interested/I don't agree, so you should
not continue to post on this subject." I suppose I'm also a little tired
of the prevalence of that attitude in society at large.

Finally, I think the evolution thread had its roots in an ID uproar at
one of the Smithsonian museums (Natural History?), so it does have
validity for some of our museum colleagues.

Who's being rude and the bully? I suggested if we continually receive
out of context "information" (the context being how this information
effects museum work and not one's personal views) perhaps we should sign
off rather than have it continue. I would say it is rude to make
personal attacks on a "professional" list.

It appears that the focus of the conversation has shifted toward the
effects on cultural institutions. And perhaps the guidelines I place on
myself for using this listserv are too strict.

Tolerance works both ways. That a future employer would read my
comment, take it as an insult, and I guess not hire me seems pretty
harsh. Was your comment to advice me or to bully me?

Ill try to keep a broader opinion on how this listserv should be used.
Since it appears no one monitors it
