Internship Announcement

Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park
Service, has one collection management internship available for Summer
2001.

Stipend:  $1,600 per month.

Period of Internship: June-August 2001 (exact start and end dates
negotiable).

Description of Museum: Bent’s Old Fort is a reconstructed trading post on
the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail. Operated between 1833-1849 by
the Bent-St. Vrain Company, the Fort was established on the US-Mexican
border to trade with the Indians, including the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa
and Comanche tribes. Although the Fort was a privately owned trading post,
it also played an important role in the War with Mexico in 1846.

The Park’s museum collection consists of over 216,000 archaeological
artifacts from the original Bent’s Fort, 28 ethnographic objects, over
6,800 history objects, over 40,000 archival documents and photographs, 179
herbarium specimens and 45 geological specimens. Over 5,000 history objects
(original and reproductions) are on exhibit in the reconstructed fort.

Description of Area: Bent’s Old Fort NHS is located 8 miles from La Junta
in southeastern Colorado. La Junta is a town with approximately 7,500
residents and is located just 60 miles east of Pueblo, CO which has a
population of c. 100,000 people. Local resources include restaurants, fast-
food chains, shops, medical facilities, a movie theatre, a community
college, local history museums, a community theatre, gyms, community
swimming pools and parks.

Internship Duties & Responsibilities:
· Accession and catalog museum objects to the National Park Service
standards using ANCS+ (Re:Discovery) collection management software.
· Document museum objects using digital and traditional formats as
part of the cataloging process.
· Complete condition assessments of museum objects as part of the
cataloging process.
· Environmental monitoring using dataloggers as well as visible and
UV light monitors.
· Integrated Pest Management. Activities include monitoring for pests
and pest activities, completing forms and documenting IPM activities,
identifying pests, and housekeeping and other preventive measures.
· Housekeeping in the reconstructed fort and museum storage building
according to the techniques and schedules discussed in the Park’s Museum
Housekeeping Plan.
· Inventory of objects on exhibit and in storage, including Phase II
of the 100% inventory project. Upon completion of the inventory project in
the Fort, print new room inventories and update the room photographs.
· Reconcile discrepancies in past accessions, cataloging errors, etc.
in paper and computer files.
· Assist the Museum Curator with exhibit maintenance including
implementing the Park’s Addendum to the 1976 Historic Furnishing Plan.
· Conduct storage condition upgrades for museum objects, including
archival materials, storage mounts, etc.
· Other duties as assigned.

Uniform: This position has a high degree of public visibility. NPS T-shirts
and hats will be provided. The intern will provide his/her own pants,
shoes, etc.

Work Environment: The intern will be working in areas without environmental
controls. Temperatures within the exhibit areas of the Fort are hot in the
summer. High levels of particulate matter are present within the exhibit
and office areas of the Fort. Sitting, standing and/or kneeling for long
periods will be necessary. The intern must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Due to the potential danger of Hantavirus exposure at the Park, interns
conducting housekeeping or other tasks that raise dust must wear HEPA-
filter half-face respirators during these activities. In accordance with
OSHA requirements and the Park’s Respirator Protection Plan, the interns
must complete a confidential medical questionnaire that will be reviewed by
a medical doctor to ensure that respirator use is safe for the student. The
Park will pay for review of the medical evaluation and any required
physical examination.

Work Schedule:  Summer work schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Up to two 15-
minute breaks per day are permitted and lunch break is 30 minutes.

Performance Evaluation: The interns will receive formal performance
evaluations according to standard National Park Service policies and
schedules. Written performance standards will be created and discussed with
interns at the start of employment.
