Pat,

Your translation of "kits" is correct.  They are rented (some places
apparently do not charge a fee) to teachers, etc. and contain materials,
lesson suggestions and whatnot on a specific topic.  In the US, The
Boston Children's Museum has an excellent and well-known kits program.
