PLAYING FOR KEEPS: A GAME PLAN TO SAVE OUTDOOR SCULPTURE
16-19 NOVEMBER 1996    AN INTERNATIONAL TOWN MEETING


This fall in Washington, D.C., citizens, conservators, art historians, public
officials, business leaders and park staff will attend a major meeting to
celebrate Save Outdoor Sculpture (SOS!) results and to consider next steps for
action. Sculptor Luis Jimenez is the keynote speaker.

Six workshops will take place Saturday, 16 November 1996:
1. "Sorry!-Is Not Good Enough: Outdoor Sculpture and the Law"
2. "Scrabble: Good Words Can Help Save Your Good Works"
3. "What's My Line? Personnel Options in Maintenance"
4. "Risk: Prudent Management with Your Collection Management Plan"
5. "Dominoes: Linking Your Sculpture and Your Schools"
6. "The $64,000 Question: Fund Raising for Treatment and Maintenance"

The town meeting officially begins on Sunday, 17 November with a morning tour,
"Statue Maker, Freeze!: On the Trail of Outdoor Sculpture"; an afternoon
symposium, "Let the Games Begin: A Celebration of America's Sculpture", which
will include the keynote speaker's address; and a reception that will include
an international showplace with database demonstrations, education and
curriculum materials, a consultant's corner, poster sessions and a book fair.

On Monday, 18 November "Passwords and Clues: Public Sculpture and Public
Awareness" and "Puzzles and Conundrums: Piecing Together an Interpretive Plan
for Your Community's Public Sculpture" will discuss how to increase public
awareness of outdoor sculpture and how to implement local change. Five
workshops will be given Monday afternoon:
1. "Overview of Treatment Methods"
2. "Planning and Contracting for Treatment and Maintenance
3. "New Commissions for Outdoor Sculpture: Design Choices for Cost-effective
Long-term Care"
4. Personnel Options in Maintenance
5. Applying the Lunch Talk to Your Collection

A reception will be held Monday evening at the National Museum of American
Art.

Tuesday, 19 November will feature a symposium on two subjects: "On Your Mark:
Setting Your Sights," and "Bingo! Playing the Trump Card: SOS! for the New
Century".
