Thought these were interesting quotes in light of the recent posts about
religion:

Louis Kahn was revered not just for his architecture but also
for the
reverence in which he held architecture -- and his
fearlessness in
saying so in words that often sounded biblical. "The
beginning of any
work must start from Belief," he wrote. "I distrust competitions
because the design is unlikely to stem from Belief, which is of
religious essence out of a commonness sensed from other men."

(New York Times, December 15, 1996
"An Architecture of Light and Remembrance"
 By HERBERT MUSCHAMP)

But the artist Joseph Kosuth writes:

"the illusion of the window of belief in both painting and philosophy
remains, today, as a deus ex machina holding the viewer's position in check"
