Fort Knox is an amazing site.

Building began in 1844 when the US and Breat Britain had a dispute over
the northern border between Maine and New Brunswick. The fort was
garrisoned from 1863-6 and again in 1898 (Spanish-American War). The fort
never saw battle.

It is currently owned by the State of Maine and operated as a state park.
There is an active preservation group.

I did some consulting at the site back in 1889 to determine the extent of
woodwork deterioration in the officers quarters casemate. There are some
current efforts to stabilize the earthen roofs and other structures of the
fort.
