The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections
                          Names Julia Golden from
                          The University of Iowa
Recipient of the first Faber Award

The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC)
announces that Julia Golden from the University of Iowa has received the first
Faber Award. This competitive cash award of $500 was given in support of her
research project, entitled A Preliminary Survey of the Effects of Deteriorating
Mounting Media on Fusulinid Collections.

The purpose of the Faber Award is to encourage innovative projects that
promote the objectives of the Society in collections management, collections
care, conservation, or other collection-oriented aspects of natural history.
This award is available to all who have been SPNHC members in good standing
the previous twelve months. Students are encouraged to apply for a Faber Award.

Julia Golden, Curator of Paleontologic Collections and Adjunct Instructor
of Museum Studies at the University of Iowa has devoted her career to caring
for and researching the special needs of paleontological collections. She has
received numerous grants and awards for the development of collections
policies and guidelines, and research on specific agents of degradation of
collections, and has published on the results of her work in a variety of
books and periodicals.

The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections, which
sponsors the Faber Award, is a multidisciplinary organization composed of
individuals who are interested in development and preservation of natural
history collections. Its objectives are to maintain an international
association of persons who study and care for natural history collections,
to encourage research on the essential requirements for preserving, storing,
studying, and displaying natural history collections, to publish a professional
journal, Collection Forum, for the dissemination of information about natural
history collections and to sponsor annual meetings, symposia and workshops to
foster the exchange of ideas and information.
