POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT            
DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN & FAMILY PROGRAMS            

Since its founding in 1910, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has been
recognized as a leader and innovator in children's environmental
education programs.  The cornerstone of BBG's education programs is our
Children's Garden that recently celebrated its 90th Anniversary next
year.  The Children's Garden is one of the first children's
environmental education programs in this country.  Today, BBG serves
more than 150,000 children annually through a wide range of on-site,
in-school and community-based programs.  We also offer teacher education
programs to facilitate and enhance the experience teachers and their
students have using the plant collections at BBG and maintaining
classroom and school plant collections of their own.            

Reporting to the Vice President of Education, the Director of Children &
Family Programs will strive to enhance the quality and effectiveness of
the Garden's programs; create and develop programs that will attract and
build an audience of children and parents; lead in developing,
mentoring, and sustaining an excellent and dedicated program staff;
promote integration and coordination of activities within BBG and
collaborative activities with other organizations; and evaluate existing
programs.          

The Director of Children & Family Programs will chiefly be responsible
for the following:          

*Set goals, manage staff and budget, evaluate and report progress of
programs to various audiences, such as the BBG's Board of Trustees, and
funding sources             
*Participate in the development and expansion of programs serving
children and families         
*Develop curriculum for teaching school children, teachers and volunteer
Weekday Garden Guides      
*Promote the integration of activities and staff among the programs
within the Department and throughout BBG        
*Provide guidance and leadership for ancillary program support such as
interns, Garden Guides, and other volunteers    
*Serve as the liaison to New York City Schools through the Board of
Education, school districts, individual public schools, independent and
parochial schools         
*Represent BBG at various community and professional meetings related to
the specific department area        
*Build linkages and partnerships with other organizations to further the
mission of the Department         
*Perform any departmental or related duties or special projects as
directed            

Qualifications:         

*BA, BS (MS preferred) in science education, environmental education,
museum studies, horticulture, or related field      
*Significant experience in education, including teaching and working
with children            
*Must have at least 5 years of related supervisory experience and
excellent interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills

*Be willing and able to delegate tasks and to coach staff to reach their
maximum potential         
*Must have the ability to communicate and listen effectively with
different audiences          
*Innovative, creative, and a self-starter           
*Must be available to work weekends
