Kimberly:

Here is what we did at the museum I worked at last year (the Dr Pepper
Museum in Waco, Texas)...

We had one programming assistant (me) who mainly took care of scheduling
groups who called in to book tours for students and senior groups. Either
the programming assistant or the programming manager would wait for their
arrival and greet them and lead them on an adapted tour.

With adult/senior groups, we didn't have a specific tour script to lead them
through, except the general "history of Dr Pepper" tour. I learned in my
experience, however, that giving them a brief synopsis of that part of the
tour was enough... most of the group liked to meander on their own and some
would even give me a history lesson from their own life experience with
certain items... something which I thoroughly enjoyed. I would sometimes
include bits of their lessons in future tours, especially with the student
tours.

We had a discounted senior rate, and had a group rate (as long as it was
booked in advance) as well. The majority of groups knew the cost in advance
and would bring the appropriate payment. The groups that just "dropped on
in" were charged the normal senior or adult rate.

I hope this helps some. Its been about a year since I worked at the museum,
so things might have changed some over the past year. I'm currently trying
to get back into the museum world after a year in the non-museum life.
