With respect to Matt Mayberry's message about the Kemp appearance
at his museum:

Having an event at the museum -- especially in a presidential campaign --
is incredibly difficult. On the other hand, it's also a great opportunity,
especially if the museum director can get some "face time" with the
candidate.

Clinton may be going to visit a museum today after he votes (may have
already happened, for all I know) and the director is primed to talk to
him about the museum's plans to get involved in Goals 2000, thanking him
for getting more funding for the program, etc., etc. Yes, it's sucking
up in the worst way, but on the other hand, from now on Clinton will
think of museums when he thinks of Goals 2000. Which is not a bad
trade-off for having to shut your doors for an hour or so.

With respect to what actually happened at Matt's museum, clearly, hanging
banners on the building was inappropriate, but it was completely beyond the
institution's control, and I can't imagine that the IRS (or anyone else)
would hold it against the museum.

A letter of complaint to Mr. Kemp (politely worded) is completely
appropriate.

But it was not improper to allow the event to take place, nor would it
jeopardize non-profit status, as long as an opponent would have the same
opportunity on the same terms.

As an ex-flunky advance person, I know how horrible they are to deal
with. Basically, they don't like to take no for an answer; their method
is to try to get what they want by bullying. Calling the police is
sometimes the only way to get them out of your face. Of course, *I* was
never like that. (Maybe that's why all my candidates lost.)
