I've been mulling over a request, posted here, for sample phrases from other
successful letters. This attitude would seem to suggest that there is a formula
for getting a job.

Sorry, there isn't one.

Same old adages apply. Show the hiring institution exactly how your skills fit
their needs and they may hire you instead of the other guy.
