Why are you ruling out the fact it was slave collar. PA had a
population of slaves, although not large, they were present. Otherwise,
because it was found in PA does not necessarily mean it came from PA.
Families during this era were mobile and moving with the frontier. This
type of collar was used in the south for slaves that were rented out and
may need to be identified. They were not on the property of the
owner...once back in possession of the owner, the collar could be
removed...

HI David,

This address just came in from someone mentioning that they were
auctioning
stuff off for the folks involved in the Tsunami.

This is with the folks at UPS, and you could probably work out something
with
them.
http://www.auctiondrop.com/index.aspx

Yes, it is through UPS and e-bay. You drop the stuff off at the UPS
store and
they place it on e-bay for you. I believe they charge a percentage. I
did not
read that far down.

Best of luck!!

Kathy.

Rare copy of Darwin's 'Origin' among books stolen from Transy library

By Art Jester

Herald-leader Staff Writer

A first edition of Charles Darwin's famous work in which he set forth
his
theory of evolution was among the rare items stolen Dec. 17 from the
Transylvania University library.

Darwin's book, The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, was
published in 1859. The first edition may have been limited to about
1,600
copies.

Sarah Emmons, Transylvania's director of public relations, said the
other
items taken from the rare book room of the library's special collections
were:

n A collection of 20 sketches, or pencil drawings, by John James
Audubon,
done in about 1855 in preparation for his 1856-57 edition of Birds of
America.

n Hortus Sanitatis (translated as Garden of Health), a two-volume
natural
history, described by Transylvania as "exceedingly rare." It was
published
in the 1500s with handpainted, gold-illuminated woodcuts.

n An illuminated manuscript written in 1425 and handpainted in color in
Winchester, England, for the Knolles family.

Susan Brown, director of Transylvania's J. Douglas Gay Jr.-Frances
Thomas
Carrick Library, said that it is really impossible to put a value on
these
items.

For insurance purposes, they were valued at "several hundred thousand
dollars," she said, but would bring far more if they were put on the
open
market.

Brown said she could not comment on the robbery.

She said the theft has caused the Transylvania library to review its
security measures, but she said she could not discuss them. The library
is
currently closed and will reopen when classes resume Jan. 6.

Transylvania is offering a $5,000 reward for the return of the rare
items or
for information leading to their recovery in good condition.

Emmons said all information will be kept confidential, including the
identity of the person or people who receive the reward.

According to Transylvania and Lexington police, the items were stolen by
two
males in their early 20s. They made their getaway with two more
suspects,
who were waiting in a newer model gray minivan, with a Kentucky
temporary
license plate.

Anyone with information about the robbery should call Crime Stoppers at
(859) 253-2020 or from a cell phone, call *2020, or Transylvania's
department of public safety at (859) 233-8118. Lexington police Lt.
James
Curless said the investigation is continuing.

"We are looking for any information that could be beneficial to this
investigation," he said.

Subject: Collars for indentured servants

In our collection we have a chain collar, iron, with a name plate of
brass
set in iron. The lock is a sliding type. The lock has been cut...I
guess
cut off of the unfortunate creature who was wearing it.
My volunteer, who is a fairly knowledgeable fellow, thought it was for
an
indentured servant and that they were commonly identified this way. It
certainly would have been viable given that we're in PA, and there were
thousands of such people here. I wouldn't say the collar is any earlier
than the late 18th century, though I may be wrong...initially I think I
felt
it was a dog collar, but why lock a dog collar? It's small...perhaps for
a
child or a woman...dunno...
Any thoughts? Provenance is no help, as it was in a collection of tools
from
a family that is NOT related to the name on the collar -- making the
whole
thing more confusing.

Subject: Re: Collars for indentured servants

Candace,

It is my understanding that iron collars were not regularly used on
indentured servants in the 17th - 18th centuries, unless such a
restraining device was
necessary due to violent or criminal transgressions. Although such
devices
(along with shackles) were used on slaves in the middle passage, the
vast
majority of native born and acculturated slaves in the colonial period
were not
collared, shackled, or otherwise restrained on the plantations, towns,
and
factories of the South. Only if the person proved problematic to the
owner and social
order - either by being a runaway or committing crimes - were they
placed in
restraints. They're definition of "problematic" was, of course, highly
subjective, and punishment or restraint could be liberally applied or
not - according
to the whim of the owners.

Most of the surviving iron collars, shackles, etc.that I have seen
appear to
be from the 19th century, when the fear of slaves and slave revolt lead
to
much more common use of these things. And such collars were also used on
dogs -
so it would be useful to get photos of your object sent to a
knowledgeable
person for comparison.

Indentured servants and slaves were given identity "papers" if they were

traveling or loaned-out. Read the indentured servant, apprentice, and
slave
runaway ads in period gazettes - they're a great source of information.

Cheers!
Dave

Janice,

I have to admit that I am guilty of this practice. When I returned from
college I sent a resume and cover letter to every museum and historical
society in the area that was in the Yellow Pages. However, my cover
letter laid out my situation and asked them to contact me if they had an
opening (rather than just sending a standard letter) and I was not
looking for a specific type of job. I am also proof that it can work as
this is how I found my current job (which incidentally is an
organization where before I was hired had only ONE staff member). So,
just take these letters as the shot in the dark they are and don't
bother with a reply unless you know of a position that would be a good
fit for the applicant.
