I found a new form of polyester padding in the store this summer and
we have been experimenting with it for padded hangers. We had been
using polyester quilt batting, in multiple layers, over a plastic tube
hanger (I think that is what they are called, the 10/$1. kind), with a
cotton or cotton/poly cover over the batting. I did check with the
hanger manufacturer for the ones I bought and the plastic was on the
good plastic list at that time. They came in adult and child sizes.

Anyway, padding the hangers with regular batting was tedious. I found
polyester batting in two and four inch thickness. This can be cut to
a shape bigger than the hanger, then the bottom edge slit and the
hanger slid up through the middle, poking the hook out the top. The
hanger can then be covered with fabric. Shaping of the batting can be
done to round edges, etc. Either thickness can be used, depending on
the needs of the garment to be hung.

The thick batting is just labeled as polyester. I have not had a
chance to show it to a conservator yet, but it seems to be speeding up
hanger construction. Seems like it will have other uses as well.
