Still another way of looking at it is, the big "growth areas" of museums
are those which bring in more people and hence more income (either
directly from the visitors themselves or indirectly, through
sponsorships that count on high numbers of visitors). Education
activities that translate into either admissions revenues or
fees-for-services, gift shops, restaurants, and special events, or
special exhibitions that can support a temporary increase in admissions
revenue, are thus "preferred" for allocation of funds over projects
which involve collections maintenance or infrastructure. About the only
"maintenance" activity that can bring in outside support is
conservation. I hang on to the (probably naive) notion that once the
flow of visitors is established through these activities, the money will
again flow to curatorial and collections areas.

So how does this translate to the job topic? For those interested in
"breaking in," the obvious areas to start with are NOT curatorial, but
in education, visitor services, shops/stores, event management, and of
course development.
