Les,

Since you sent the same message to the whole list, I'll respond as such.

Name one. There was a site of Lichtenstein prints last
summer. It was promptly shutdown. Another last spring of Monets. Again
shutdown.

Museums will now (GATT treaty) have to get permission from the
artist/artist's estate or foundation to publish images (which the museums
own), same as print publication. The lawyers managing the copyrights for
artists are refusing to get involved with the Net. On the other hand,
"unknown" artists are very eagar.

> How can you ignore the exposure?

a.It's more a matter of philosophy.
Some believe in overexposure: Mona Lisa.
Some believe in protection: supposedly the Barnes collection, Disney.
b.Museums collection compose of individual decisions regarding
"exposure". We have incredible restrictions (from
artists/donors) on some works and they will never be on the Net.
c.I don't believe in just sticking 100s or 1000s of images on the Net.
For what purpose, besides clogging up the bandwidth?

You want anecdotal evidence?
It may not be a Stella they want. How about an Ancient piece? Someone
blatantly told me, as soon as I put XXX back up, he's going to use it for
his logo. With or without Museum permission.
I think it's the "Sooo Sue Me" mentality.
I don't have time or money to police every possible site.
