I recently had a chance to review donation web sites. The best bet
seems to be Helping.org. They handle donations for any 501(C)3 (the
US Tax code designation for a registered not-for-profit organization).

They have ready links to major legitimate organizations accepting
donations for the tragedy.

Helping.org charges no fees to either the not-for-profit or the giver
and are underwritten by the AOL/Time Warner Foundation.
