Subject: Re: Grant writing courses

Cheryl,

I have taught several grant writing workshops for collections care (IMLS-CP,

CAP, NEH-PAG). A generic grant writing course will give you basic
information about grant process in general, as Rebecca suggests. However,
none of it would be specific to the museum field, nor to the specific grant
programs that are of interest to you. You probably can get this same
general information by reading any of a variety of publications.

I would suggest that you find a course or workshop that discusses the
specific areas that you want to fund, and ideally talks about the grant
programs that are available within that area. That way, you can get
specific tips and insights about those grants that will make your
application more competitive. For example, in my programs I explain how to
creatively meet the application guidelines, even if you think you don't,
what field reviewers and grant panelists (I have been both) are looking for
in that program, what supporting material is really important, and how to
construct the project/narrative in a concise, clear manner. I particularly
like to discuss how to meet the match requirements with little or no
institutional cash, and go over the actual application with the attendees so

that they are familiar and comfortable with it. The goal is for the
attendees to leave with a can-do attitude.

I can't speak for others, but I am usually willing to offer a workshop on
the aforementioned grant programs on a pro-bono basis (expenses only) if a
museum organizes the program and can assemble a dozen or more participants.
Perhaps others with different areas of expertise are willing to do so also?
On a personal note, I will be out at Ithaca on a project in July. I realize

that this is rather short lead time, but if you think a workshop may be a
possibility, let's chat.

Good luck.
