Adult and Special Needs Programs Coordinator
The New Jersey Historical Society

The Adult and Special Needs Programs Coordinator/Museum Educator will be
responsible for the development and execution of programs ensuring that the
programs meet the institution’s goals of creating opportunities for learning
that are suitable for adults and special needs audiences, illuminate aspects
of America’s past through the lens of New Jersey and engage audiences in the
history and heritage of the state.  S/he works with the Curator of Education
and Acting Director of Programs to guide, support, and ensure the goals of
the Education Department are met through quality programming.  

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
·	 Teach education programs for all ages and levels 
·	 Develop and expand programs and audience for adults, including weekly
lunchtime programs,   tour group programs, walking tours, Saturday adult
programs, both on and off-site
·	 Conduct library research and identify resources for education programs
·	 Cultivate and expand programs and audiences with special needs 
·	 Perform general department functions - (i.e. program statistics,
development, evaluation, &  budgets
·	 Train and supervise docent volunteers for adult programs
·	 Oversee the development, production and disbursement of program brochure
·	 Work collaboratively with education staff in the development/execution of
new programs and  initiatives.
·	 Cultivate and maintain relationships with cultural and historical
communities  
·	 Stay current with state and national trends/policies in Education and
historical content so to ensure NJHS program relevance

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:  
*	 Understanding of and familiarity with interactive teaching theory and methods
*	 Strong writing/communication and research skills
*	Solid understanding of and ability to apply age-appropriate activities and
programs in teaching 
*	Ability to produce quality programs for adult audiences
*	Demonstrate creativity in presenting ideas while maintaining scholarly
integrity
*	Achieve goals and complete projects individually and with groups
*	Willingness to take responsibility for projects and see them through to
completion
*	Ability to work as a team member with staff, consultants, and other
collaborators
*	Flexibility in adapting to various situations
*	Respect for diversity
*	Demonstrate use of best professional judgment 
*	Establish and maintain positive relations with staff, community contacts,
groups of children and adults, teachers, museum educators, and the general
public
*	Maintain a sense of humor
·	Cooperate with the schedule of the Adult and Special Needs Programs 
-Coordinator/Museum Educator will be a 5-day week, with flexibility to work
a weekend or evening program as needed.  
·	Possess B.A./B.S. in education/museum education, Master’s preferred,
minimum 2 years museum education/public programming experience
