Re: CIMI Z39.50 Roundtable=20

This is to invite you to participate in a roundtable discussion to=
 help
shape CIMI's agenda of work in the area interchange of museum
information via digital networks. CIMI's full provisional workplan=
 has
been posted separately.

You can participate by attending a meeting in Washington DC February=
 23,
1994 10:00 am to 3:30pm at the National Gallery of Art ( enter East
Building, go to control desk at the Study Centre and ask for Robin=
 Dowden=20
tel 842-6394) and electronically by discussion on Museum-L. Please
RSVP to me by email asap for logistics reasons. =20

The meeting Feb 23 is intended to bring together members of the CIMI
Consortium with interested museums and online information retrieval
experts to discuss and make recommendations for how the CIMI
consortium can pursue its goals of developing museum participation=
 in
networked communications and developing International Standardized
Profiles (ISPs) that will best assure system-independent interoperability
and the open interchangability of information among museums.

Topics for discussion include:

a) CIMI's choice of Z39.50 as a key standard for positioning museums=
 to
take advantage of the convergence of information retrieval services=
 such
as WAIS, WWW, Gopher, and MOSAIC.

b) the utility of the ISP as described by ISO/IEC TR 10000-1 and=
 3. An
ISP specifies a set of one or more standards and where necessary=
 the
chosen classes, subsets, parameters and options of those base standards
in combination with requirements leading to implementation agreements
for accomplishing a particular function. =20
=20
c) components of an ISP for the Z39.50 Ver 3 based information retrieval
and interchange of museum information at the collections level and=
 object
level with associated images.

d) the development of models, formats, attribute sets and syntaxes=
 to
express the content and meaningful organization of museum information
which is to be the content of interchange.

If you have questions please contact me at any of the addresses below.=

Thank you for your help with this work.
