The winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Economics, Amatarya Sen, has
recently argued at the World Bank in Washington DC that culture,
including the arts and museums, matter greatly in not just cultural and
social terms, but in economic terms also.

You can access both a summary of Professor Sen's important address and
listen to an audio webcast of the whole of the speech: "How Does Culture
Matter?" through the Culture and Development home page highlights on the
Development Gateway information service, officially launched on 30 July:

        http://developmentgateway.org/topic/page_id=3639

There are already over 500 abstracts, web links and original documents
on Culture and Development and three sub-topics: Arts, Crafts and
Media, Cultural Management, and Heritage Preservation, and the site is
growing all the time.

This service is completely free, and you can register to receive regular
news of updates, and to contribute your own information, research and
views, in just a few moments by clicking on "Join the Community" on
whichever topic particularly interests you, or indeed on all four of
these if you wish.

More than a year's work has gone in to researching and establishing the
Development Gateway as a global resource on development issues (see the
main home page http://developmentgateway.org/ for fuller details), so
please try this out.

At the very least please let us have feedback on it: comments,
criticisms, suggestions for or offers of additional material (which can
be in the form of web site links, MS. Word or similar original documents
or in .pdf format). However, we very much hope that you will want to
"Join the Community".

Thank you.
