I was curious, so I finally got around to searching the archives.  I found
one lengthy thread in 2004, wherein all the historians who had actually
researched the topic had come up empty -- no closet tax.  While absence of
evidence is not evidence of absence, still, no one seems to have found an
instance where this tax was levied.

As for "disrespect" -- eh, no biggie.  It was a simple yes or no question,
and a simple answer would have been nice, but reminding people of the
wonderful resource that is the archives is no small service, either.
