Background on UHF's Overseas Lecture Tours on Irish Genealogy

Since 1979 the UHF has undertaken annual lecture tours of USA in addition to
occasional tours to Australia and other countries, such as Canada, Britain,
New Zealand and Argentina, where there are significant numbers of people who
can claim Irish ancestry. These tours form part of the Foundation's outreach
function aimed at strengthening links between the Irish Diaspora and the
homeland.

Lectures
During the tours the Foundation is represented by the Research Director, Dr
Brian Trainor, and the Executive Director, Shane McAteer. Dr Trainor's
lectures focus on the records available for Irish and Scots-Irish research
and how they can be used. Shane McAteer gives presentations on computer
developments in Irish genealogy and how the various computer databases can
be used as tools for research. He brings along UHF's entire database,
comprising almost 2 million records, with him on CD-ROM and has the facility
for carrying out searches using a laptop computer.

Consultations
In addition to the lectures, delegates attending UHF workshops are also
offered one-to-one consultations prior to or after each meeting, which can
include a pre-prepared written assessment on the feasibility of research. To
facilitate this we send out copies of a questionnaire that the participants
complete and return to us in advance of the meeting.

Books for purchase and free literature packs
A range of publications on Irish genealogy is available at each venue and
free literature packs, which include a selection of useful genealogical and
tourist related material, will be distributed to each participant.

Anyone interested in either hosting or attending these events should
