Hello Renee',

Since you're in Philadelphia you may already be familiar with the PISEC (Philadephia/Camden Informal Science Education Collaborative) studies, which include a handbook that identifies the characteristics of exhibits that are conducive to family learning. This would obviously have implications for designing interactives, and we have used the principles from these studies to help design interactive exhibits for family and adult/child groups. Just in case you hadn't run across it yet, here is the reference for the PISEC publication.

Borun, M., Dritsas, J., Johnson, J. I., Peter, N. E., Wagner, K. F., Fadigan, K., Jangaard, A., Stroup, E., & Wenger, A. (1998). Family learning in museums: The PISEC perspective. Philadephia/Camden Informal Science Education Collaborative (PISEC); Philadelphia, PA.

Borun et. al also published a couple of articles in Curator related to the studies, here is a review and the references for the articles on informalscience.org: http://www.informalscience.org/articles/303.html, http://www.informalscience.org/articles/301.html.

Good luck,

Steve

Subject: group-based interactives

Hello All,

I am looking for information on group-based
learning interactives: i.e., those interactives
that are designed for use by single visitors as
well as multiple individuals (families, school
groups, etc). =20

I am interested in examples of actual exhibits
(past or present, successful or unsuccessful)
that take this approach, as well as any
literature (articles, books) or contacts that may
have further information on this topic. =20

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is
a component of my graduate thesis work! Thank
you very much.

Cheers,

Renee' Mensing-Solick
