There were a couple of controversial exhibits at the Art Institute of
Chicago several years back (sometime before 1993); One included a
painting of then-mayor Washington in underwear (I seem to recall it being
women's underwear)... another included the American flag on the floor, in
front of a book in which viewers were invited to write comments; to do
so, one had to either step on the flag, or pick it up.
