URBAN LANDSCAPES

Special Masters Class for Artists

(Participants should have B.F.A or M.F.A. level studio experience
or the

equivalent.)

Instructor: Mark Brest van Kempen


This class provides a rare opportunity for artists to create
public site

specific work in the unique environment of Sunnyside
Conservatory.  From its

interesting architectural elements to its historical associations
with

colonialism and the Victorian interest in the exotic, the
Conservatory
provides a rich context for artists to respond with site specific
work.  The
first meeting will be a slide-illustrated artist's talk
graciously hosted on
Wednesday evening by Bird and Beckett Books and Records in Glen
Park (on
Diamond @ Chenery).  The

second meeting on the following Sunday will be held in the
Conservatory.


Mark Brest van Kempen has created a variety of artworks using the
landscape

itself as sculptural material.  He received his MFA from the San
Francisco Art

Institute and has been an artist-in-residence at Marin Headlands
Center for

the Arts. His work has been presented in many publications
including Time
Magazine, The New York Times, LA Times  and Lucy Lippardís newest
book, The
Lure of the Local.  He has spoken around the country and abroad
on the
possibilities of creating artwork that functions outside the
museum /gallery
context and that brings aesthetic and symbolic meaning to
everyday
situations. He has recently taught at the San Francisco Art
Institute and
Stanford University.

sense of neighborhood.

Workshops are FREE: Sponsored by the Friends of Sunnyside
Conservatory, San

Francisco Park and Recreation Department, Neighborhood Parks
Council, and

Friends of Recreation and Parks.
