Please forgive the cross-posting and the interruption of the
creationism/evolution discussion:

To the ever resource-ful Museum listers--

What books on the history of museum education would you suggest? I am
currently writing my Ph.d. dissertation, "The Viewer Viewed:
Representations of the Museum Public in the Victorian Era," and am
examining the depiction of people in museums as part of a larger discourse
on the role of the museum in English society. Education, particularly that
of the working classes, was of primary importance and I am trying to find
what museums did, beyond exposing their audiences to art, to achieve this
goal.

I am particularly interested in 19th century England but will welcome all
bibliographic suggestions, particularly those on Gustav Waagen. I also
welcome any other resources, beyond the history of museum education. I
read German, French, and, though not relevant on this occasion, ancient
Greek and Latin.

Responses either on or off list are welcome. I will post a compilation of
suggestions I receive.

Thanks so much for your help!
Jamie
