MEET JULIA MERKEL

I am the curator of collections for the JMU Foundation
Fine Art Collection (staff of one overseeing a 2,000
object collection 90% of which is in storage--10% on
permanent display in various locations around campus).

The collection is potentially on the verge of many
changes: transfer of ownership/governance from
foundation to university, and inclusion in a fine and
performing arts center not yet designed (5-10 years
from groundbreaking?)

I would appreciate mentoring advice from someone who
could point out the pitfalls, possibilities, and
politics of such a transfer and what to watch for in
the design/construction process.

I also expect that my position might be re-aligned
from reporting to a foundation accountant to someone
(dept chair, dean, provost?) on campus and that duties
will be broadened to oversee a general campus
collection (with no central records) as well.

Has anyone been there? Can you teach me your lessons
learned?
