The Hampton Roads Naval Museum and USS Wisconsin have a mascot named Bucky the Badger. He was the mascot of the Wisconsin in WWII. We have newsletters from the ship of that time period that feature Bucky the Badger. Our costume was originaly a wolf costume that was modified into a badger wearing a WWII seaman outfit. We have our docent dress up in the costume and greet visitors. Many visitors pose for pictures with Bucky. he is very popular. He attends mascot mania events at the local sports team home games and all museum function. H is so popular that we recieve calls from orginizations requesting Bucky's apperance at their events. He is also featured in our childrens gallery guide and activity books.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Museum Mascots

Does anyone have experience with museum mascots? I have checked the archives
and don't find much. I am particularly interested in how you introduced the
character to your visitors. Did you have a naming contest? What types of
events does the character appear at? Any other pointers?
